The modern European fashion of the high heel comes from the Italian "chapiney" or "chopine" style: mounted shoes on a 15 to 42 cm high cylinder. In 1430 chopines were prohibited in Venice, but nothing could stop the trend. The invention of the high heel is attributed to Catherine of Medici in Paris, in the 16th century, who used them due to her short stature, and soon introduced them into fashion amongst the European aristocracy. At the age of 14, Catherine de Medici was engaged to the powerful Duke of Orleans, later the King of France.

In the 17th century, the English Parliament punished as witches all women who used high heels to seduce men into marrying them. In his biography, the famous Giovanni Casanova declared his love for high heels, which raised women's hoop skirts, thus showing their legs.

In 1791, the "Louis" high heels disappeared with the revolution, and Napoleon banished high heels in an attempt to show equality. Despite the Napoleonic Code against high heels, in 1793 Marie Antoinette went to the scaffold to be executed wearing two-inch heels.

In the 1860s, heels as fashion became popular again, and the invention of the sewing machine allowed greater variety in high heels. In Victorian art and literature, cartoons and allusions to tiny feet and the affliction of large feet (typical of the elderly spinster) were ubiquitous. Victorians thought that the high heel emphasized the instep arch, which was seen as symbolic of a curve of a woman.

While high heels enjoyed widespread popularity in the late nineteenth century but the Depression during the 1930s influenced Western shoe fashion as heels became lower and wider.

With the creation of the miniskirt in the early 1960s, stilettos came into fashion and were attached to boots that enhanced the look of bare legs. A stiletto heel is a long, thin heel found on some boots and shoes, usually for women. It is named after the stiletto dagger, the phrase being first recorded in the early 1930s. Stiletto heels may vary in length from 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) to 5 cm (2 inches) or more if a platform sole is used.

As for finding a comfortable pair of high heeled pumps, I can testify that this is indeed possible. I have feet that are narrow with long toes, so finding an attractive pump can be a challenge, but knowing what to look for and understanding your particular needs will enable you to find a high heeled shoe that will make your feet happy. Look for rubber on the heel itself, non-skid soles and a padded insole, paying particular attention to the ball of the foot, which receives the most pressure.

I've also bought two pairs of mules, though I always feared my feet would slip out of them and sprain an ankle. To prevent this from happening, it's important for the sole to have good traction, so look for some kind of ridges on the sole.

High heeled sandals are my pump of choice, because the straps are adjustable--and, in a good shoe, the straps are also padded. I like the "breathing room" of a sandal, even though the look of a pointed toe pump is very stylish. To find a comfortable pair, carefully examine the straps, running your fingers over the top and bottom. Straps that have rough seams or stitches that protrude will rub against you foot, cutting into the skin or causing blisters.

Open Toe Pumps

There are several types of pumps. If you want a pump for warm weather, the high-heeled sandal is the way to go. They often come with trims, such as leather flowers or braided straps that make them look more flirty than regular pumps.

The next type is the open-toe pump, which many women find a good alternative to pointed toes as your toes have more room. Showing off a new pedicure is another appeal of open toe pumps.

Pointed Toe Pumps

The classic pointy toe heel is the standard fashionable, dressy pump for many women. It is recommended that, to compensate for the fact that your toes cannot fit into the point, you purchase a pair half a size bigger than those you usually wear. The next type of pump--ones with round toes--give more room for your toes to move as they are shaped more like your feet. Round-toe pumps often feature a strap over the instep and a chunky heel and often come in the popular Mary Jane style.

Slingback Pumps

The next type of pump is the slingback, which has an open heel that's held on by a strap that goes around it. These straps come in an adjustable, buckled variety or an elastic band that grips the back of you heel. The elastic makes the slingback slip onto your foot more quickly, but if you have feet that are narrow or wide, the buckled strap is probably the better option.

Mules

The next type of pump is the mule, which is basically just a backless, strapless shoe into which you just slide your foot. The heels tend to be lower (often they have a "kitten" heel), because they don't have and kind of strap to hold them in place. Clogs area a type of mule--without the fashion appeal.

To help keep mules on your feet (vs. stuck in a sidewalk crack), you can insert grips, which are a textured typed of insole pad. Since I tend to be on the clumsy side, with wobbly ankles--I always use grips in the mules I own (truthfully, I don't wear them that often.)

Stiletto Heels

Stilettos: they go with dominatrix outfits, right? In fact, the word "stiletto" refers to a narrow type of Italian dagger; they are also called "spike" heels. Genuine stiletto heels have a stabilizing steel post in the heel to strengthen them. The heels can reach ridiculous (up to 10 inches) heights, though most of them are in the 4-5" range.

This added height can make your legs look longer and leaner as well as added inches to your stature. I recommend that you practice wearing them--walking around the house--because you can injure yourself (or at least look like an idiot) when you wear them out on the town.

You should be aware that continuous wear of heels this high will prevent the muscles and tendons in the back of your leg from flexing as they normally do. For this reason, it's a good idea to alternate the type of shoes you wear so this does not occur.

Ankle Boots

A cross between a pump and a boot is the "booty" (no, it's not your butt!). The shaft ranges in height to just below to two or three inches above the ankle and--depending on the style--look good with either pants or skirts. The latest style of these ankle boots feature an open toe, which seems--to me--to go against common sense, but if you like them--go for it!

It always pays to purchase quality shoes, because it's absolutely true that "you get what you pay for". If, however, you cannot afford top-of-the-line shoes, you can--with a few tricks--get by with less expensive pairs. This article is for all women who have no idea what a kitten heel is! It is also for those women who have been secretly wondering what the difference between a platform shoe and a wedge shoe is. If your knowledge of the most fashionable styles for your feet is a bit fuzzy, then jump right in and read on for everything you could ever possibly have wanted to know about women's high heels, beginning, of course, with the definition: high heels are shoes where the heel of the foot is taller than the toe.

High Heel History: From the Conception to the Contemporary

Interestingly enough, that classic women's shoe known as the high heel originated not because of beauty and fashion but because of dirt and filth. In ancient Egypt, butchers wore heels so that their feet would be lifted above the blood on the ground, and, similarly, pattens (tall wooden soles) were worn in Europe during the Middle Ages to allow people to walk above the disgusting city streets which were littered with urine and feces.

From the 15th through the 17th centuries, heels called chopines were popularized throughout Europe. These heels could be over 30 inches tall, sometimes requiring women to use canes and servants to walk! Some theorize that chopines were invented by men to keep women immobile and submissive. But, in 1533, Queen Catherine D'Medici of France commissioned a shoe-maker to create for her a pair of shoes not unlike modern platform wedges. And thus, that fashionable footwear known today as the high heel began.

It is not enough to buy an expensive pair of heels to look and feel sexy, you also need to know how to walk in your heels. This can be a lengthy and somewhat painful process. Here are some helpful suggestions:

- Don't go from never wearing heels to slipping on 5" stilettos. Train your feet to allow your ankles to develop the strength they need to walk safely and gracefully over a time period of several weeks.

- Not all high heels are created equally. Stand in your shoes on a hard, non-slip surface with your knees straight and raise yourself on your toes an inch. Can't do it? That means that your heels are too high for you right now.

To strengthen your ankles try these easy exercises:

Toe Raises - stand with your heel over the edge of a step. Raise up on the ball of your foot, hold for 5 seconds and slowly lower your heel to the start position. Repeat 10 repetitions several times a day.

Heel and Toe Walking - start by walking on your toes for 20 seconds, switch and walk on your heels for 20 seconds. Build up to one minute on toes and heel alternate for 5 to 10 minutes. Perform several times per day.

- Take small, slow steps. Make sure not to bend your knees any more than you normally would and put your heel down first before your toes. The taller the heel, the shorter your stride should be.

- Practice, practice, then practice some more. Wear your heels for a few hours around the house before you take them out on the town. Make sure you practice changing directions, going up and down stairs and try different surfaces, such as carpet, linoleum and tile. Put on some fun music and dance. Once you're comfortable walking around your house go outside and walk your sexy high heels up and down your sidewalk a few times.

- Give yourself a break. Sit down every twenty minutes or so but don't take off your heels until you're done practicing, this will worsen the pain. When you're finished wearing your high heels for the day, apply some eucalyptus or other cooling lotion to your feet.

- Switch it up. Try not to wear the same pair of shoes for two days in a row. Let your shoes breath between uses and keep in mind that the regular wear of high heels contracts the Achilles tendon, which can lead to heel pain. It can alter your posture by placing excess force on the inside of your knees and narrow toe space can thicken the nerves leading to pain and numbness in your toes.

Make Your High Heel Shoes Comfortable - It Can Be Done!

I can't tell you how many years I either suffered through uncomfortable heel wearing or stopped wearing heels altogether because I thought the term "high heels" was synonymous with pain.  Generally it is.

Then one day, while researching online, I discovered some shoe inserts that actually alleviate the pain inherent in wearing alluring footwear.  I was skeptical, because I really hate hurting feet and figured it was my lot in life, but on impulse I bought some and let me tell you, my fashion style has never been the same since - I actually have some now!

My insert of choice are Foot Petals products.  They're very low profile so they don't make your shoes uncomfortably tight, but they do keep your foot in place, and that's the bottom line of why most high heels hurt to begin with.  All that pressure on the ball of your foot and with your heel placed higher, the ball of the foot tends to slide forward, which in turn squishes your toes in the front of the shoe.  No good!

So for ball-of-foot pain avoidance, I put Foot Petals TipToes in all my high heels.  They're a really light foamy material that stick to the insole of your shoe.  You'll only notice they're there because your feet won't hurt!  It's quite amazing how such a small idea can be downright ingenious.

Getting into high heels for the first time and looking the part isn't something that can come easily to most women. If the first time you put them on is an evening you expect to look good sashaying forth fashionably on the dance floor at an office party, you could find yourself in a bit of a spot trying for success pulling it off like an old hand (an old foot?). But heels don't need to be such a challenge; if you know how to go about them.

For your first time in heels, you need to plan ahead for the event and know what to shop for. Your wobbly sense of balance on heels for the first time is best helped by shoes that offer you plenty of ankle support. It's not infrequently that you see women on the street with high heels shoes on taking this advice rather too literally: you'll see them moving forward in scared little baby steps. The "baby steps"advice is meant for how high the heels should probably be when you first try them on. Once you do have a pair on, you'll need to consider a bolder stride. The more steps you take with your high heels on, the more likely you'll be to trip. Walking in high heels is an act of active faith in yourself; you're supposed to more or less stride. Now when your heels are high, your hips try reflexively to even the balance out, pushing themselves forward. Your whole posture changes in a way you might not even realize; to balance out the way your heels try to take you forward, try consciously changing the way you stand so that you lay yourself back a little bit. And you could do that even as you walk. You could also adopt a slightly wider stance for a little more balance. Your walk needs to be striding and sashaying; that's what brings to life out in you.

A round or square toe box allows more natural movement for the toes is generally less likely to cause trouble.

This leads to a common form of heel pain called plantar facscitis. It's the most common cause of morning heel pain in women.

Interestingly if you wear three or four inch heels every day, you can end up with the same problem. The Achilles tendon will gradually contract and tighten up if you always wear high heels. Podiatrists call this condition "equinus deformity." Once you have a tight Achilles tendon, you will get more tension on the plantar fascia that can cause pain in the bottom of the heel.

One thing you should take into consideration is your foot type. If you have bunions, you must make sure that you choose shoes that don't have seams or stitching running over the bump at the big toe joint. These seams can rapidly inflame the bunion causing bursitis. Pick the wrong shoes and you'll be seeing the foot surgeon for bunion removal surgery. Pick the right shoes and you can live with bunions for years.

If you have flat feet and notice redness at the back of the heel, you might prefer open back shoes. You should know that you could have a heel that is likely to form Haglund's Deformity (also called "pump bumps". This is a big knot on the back of the heel where the Achilles tendon attaches. It only happens with repeated rubbing from the heel counter in shoes, so open back shoes can prevent it from getting worse.

The first thing to consider when selecting you shoes is style. If you have it in your head that nothing looks as good as four inch heels, take the time to at least find some that have a cushioned forefoot. Thin leather alone is rarely enough.

If you have found shoes you love that don't love you back, try adding some inserts or padding. Many fashionable shoes (especially heels) have almost no padding. You local podiatrist can offer many suggestions on gel cushions that fit in the shoes without altering your look. Custom orthotics can also support the foot and decrease foot pain. These are much more expensive. However, it is like the difference between an outfit that is off-the-rack and one that is custom tailored. With shoe inserts, you get what you pay for. In a sense, you are letting different parts of your feet recover each time you change shoes.
